Left-handed underpants to save men “valuable time”!

A British store is launching a range of underpants for left-handed men, an innovation it says will save them both time and embarrassment in front of the porcelain.

The new range, by UK-based Hom, will have a horizontal opening instead of a vertical slit accessed from the right-hand side, breaking a tradition that has lasted for 75 years.

“In our view, this is a vital step toward equality for left-handed men,” said Rob Faucherand of Debenhams store.

Almost 10 percent of British men are believed to be left handed but men’s Y-fronted underpants have traditionally had a right-handed opening from the time they were invented in 1935.

“As a result,” Debenhams said, “left-handed men have to reach much further into their pants, performing a Z shaped maneuver through two 180 degree angles before achieving the result that right handed men perform with ease.”

Previously, it added, boxer shorts, with an adaptable, ambidextrous opening in the middle, have been the underpants of choice for left handed men.

The new pants mean that left handed men can finally go to the bathroom as quickly and efficiently as their right-handed colleagues, the store said.

“Switching the opening from vertical to horizontal may sound like a small step, but it’s the major breakthrough that many have been waiting for,” added Faucherand.

There is also a fully left-handed design of underpants available from Clever.   These have the opening on the left so are not suitable for right-handed men.

Update July 2015

The left-handed underpants seem to have been discontinued but HOM still produce a range of underwear with horizontal rather than vertical openings

some people (such as my 6 year old brother) do not even have a right hand. It’s so difficult to find pants that open the right way, so that he can go to the bathroom like the rest of the kids in his class.

I’m just about to celebrate my 68th Birthday and since the year dot have had trouble opening my underpants when I want to releive myself.

Not once in all of those years has it occured to me that the opening is the wrong way round, for a lefthanded person

Hooray. No more lembarrassing enlarged prostrate dribbles down my trouser leg, when it all goes wrong.

To be honest, when I’m wearing light trousers I now sit on the potty, just like when I was a baby.

Can’t wait for the postman to arrive with my new undies.

Oh, please. We left-handed men are agile enough to use the right hand once in a while?

    • Joe says:

Agreed @JimDoss. Mr. Martin, that was what we call “TMI” in the States. I have some cheaply-made Hanes that open even-handedly.

    • Derek says:

True, but doesn’t this, everything right handed world piss you off just a little?
From changing the knife and fork at a restaurant to countless other things. Is it too much to ask for a pair of jocks to suit a left handed dangler?
